Seeking Your Help with My Next Book
If you are a filmmaker, musician, artist, or writer, how do you attract a big audience online...and ideally build a self-sustaining career with the support of that audience?
So I'm looking for people who have really built their careers on the Internet, not necessarily established bands or filmmakers who've also done cool stuff with the Web.
One example of someone I've interviewed already is Michael Buckley, the YouTube star who recently quit his day job and signed a development deal with HBO.
Other examples of people I've been talking to: the guys at JibJab...Ze Frank ... OK GO ... and Natasha Wescoat. Essentially, people who have figured out how to attract and interact with lots of people online, and who've built business models around that without ticking off their fans.
Would love to hear any ideas you have...
Labels: HBO, JibJab, marketing, Michael Buckley, Natasha Wescoat, OK GO, YouTube, Ze Frank

Jonathan Coulton is the man, as far as Internet-based music careers go.

you might want to speak with Damian Kindler of the online series SANCTUARY. He built it online first and attracted the fans which then triggered the broadcast deal.

You should talk to Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi. They live just a few miles from me in Hilo. They are the #2 most popular on YouTube

You should look for Felicia Day.

She writes/produces/acts on The Guild, a webseries about online gamers and she did 3 episodes and then finished the season (with 10 episodes) with the help of viewers funding. Now she got a deal with Microsoft for season 2.
She was also in Dr. Horrible, an internet sensation done by Joss Whedon.
Also, look for Kim Evey (The Guild, Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show, 2 Hot Girls in the Shower) and Greg Benson (http://www.mediocrefilms.com/).
Oh! One more: Wil Wheaton

Would the askaninja guys apply?
And I'm with Tristan, but any chance you could finish it sooner? Looking forward to it.

Yes, Ask A Ninja would be good. They were also in my earlier book, "The Future of Web Video."

We're not paying the rent, but Wicked Awesome Films has gathered a respectable audience and is poised for big things in 2009. Shoot me an e-mail at wickedawesomefilms@gmail.com.

Don't count the big guys out of this conversation, Scott. Trouble attracting audience is not necessarily limited to independents. More often than not, networks that have web only projects don't do a good job of programming the content...and the websites themselves tend to suffer from horible IA. As a result, the teams producing web-only content for the large networks find limited advantages, in my experience.
I have been producing web content for large networks for a few years now, and I have found that audience development is a war of attrition, and requires every tool in the arsenal, from SEO to proper online programming to distributing and syndicating with a vengeance.
The big networks used to think that they would be over-night web successes because they had large, stable traffic. That traffic hasn't translated well to their web only properties. As a result, they have to hustle for every eyeball as much as the small guys do.
Also, Scott - really great blog. Have been reading for a while now. And I am half way through the book. Very enjoyable read.

You might find something interesting with Lance Weiler and his latest film, Head Trauma. He spoke at my college about creating a buzz around his new project online, by getting hits through Google to a myspace campaign and an online comic. I found it incredibly interesting, plus he was half the team that created The Last Broadcast (the *other* Blair Witch-esque film of that time) which was the first film distributed digitally to multiple theaters.
