Building the best digital cinema camera...ever

At Macworld yesterday, in the Apple booth, I bumped into HD for Indies proprietor Mike Curtis, fresh in from Austin.

He mentioned a new camera I hadn't heard of, being developed by the founder of Oakley sunglasses, Jim Jennard. It's intended to be the best possible acquisition device for digital movies. It's called Red, and the Web site (not much on it yet) is here.

Mike's detailed info about the camera is on his site. He gave me the impression that the company's mission is to blow out of the water competing cameras from Sony, Panavision, Thomson, Arri, and others. They've been at it since 1999. According to their site, "We decided to skip several generations of evolution and jump right to building the camera you have been dreaming about."

We may hear more from Red in April, when they'll be making some announcements at the annual NAB show in Las Vegas.
