Text Messaging the Movie Screen

Screenvision and Verizon Wireless are getting together later this month to test an audience survey technology together, in 10 US cities. The idea is to encourage movie-goers to text message votes about their favorite music to the screen, where they'll see the results tallied (amidst the rolling series of pre-show advertisements.)

News of the deal is here and here.

If you're at a theater that's showing pre-show ads, I suppose it can't hurt to have more to do than just sitting there passively...though I do worry that this will make it seem OK to be text-messaging *during* the movie.

  • WTF?!?! Texting before a movie?!?! how ADD-Nation have we become that we can't sit for 15-20 minutes without stimulation in a room. God forbid that we gasp! have to talk to people. This is just a way for Verizon to get people to text and then charge them .10 to .20 per text (provided they don't have unlimited text...which means the price of that will go up as well). As if do-everything phones weren't a distraction enough already!

  • I'm waiting for the press release about how movie admission prices are dropping because of all the revenue theaters get from advertisements like this.

  • I heard stories that at American Idol auditions last year they projected peoples text comments on the screen behind the performers. Might be worth looking into. I think it was Austin that my friend saw it.

  • Texting should not be encouraged in any way, shape or form. I wish there'd be a direct invitation to everyone in the auditorium to not only silence their phones, but shut them down entirely. The distraction of a bright text screen during a movie is enough to have me support a rule allowing ushers (if there are any left) to escort violators from the building.

  • Here's a company that's already doing it. www.firetext.tv. It allows theatre goes to Post Text messages to the Screens, as well as Vote while the system calculates live and presents the options in a live Bar Graph Format. Also the theatre has the option of running Text to Win Campaigns, Flirting Events and can bulk SMS Theatre Patrons of new releases.
